The Emergency Medical Services (EMS) system in Sacramento County faces many of the same challenges experienced by healthcare organizations across the country, and the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District is not alone in developing solutions to manage high EMS system utilizers, low acuity 9-1-1 calls and behavioral health incidents more effectively and efficiently. 

Mobile Integrated Health (MIH) appears to be a solution to the vexing problems faced by emergency services. The goal of Metro Fire’s Sacramento Mobile Integrated Health (SacMIH) pilot project was to build an adaptable and scalable program that could meet the diverse healthcare needs in our community. Because of the alliances and relationships fostered by SacMIH, the program was able to pivot to meet the challenges COVID-19 brought to Sacramento.

About the Presenter

Scott Perryman  

Captain/Paramedic/PA-C & MIH Program Coordinator | Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District

Scott began his career in 2002 working for Hall Ambulance Service in Bakersfield, CA as an EMT and Paramedic. While working for Hall Ambulance, he graduated Bakersfield College with an AA in Fire Technology. He considers himself lucky to be asked to play racquetball for Brigham Young University in 2004 and graduated with a BA in Exercise Science in 2006.
 
Perryman also feels he “hit the job lottery” when he joined Sacramento Metro Fire in 2006 as a Firefighter/Paramedic. His passion in medicine led him to put himself through Physician Assistant School and he graduated from Stanford’s PA program in 2011. He was promoted to Captain in 2013 and has been heavily involved in EMS. Having knowledge in pre-hospital and hospital medicine has led to his passion in Mobile Integrated Health. His main passion is his family and experiencing the roller-coaster of life with them.

About the Presenter

Barbie Law 

Assistant Chief, EMS Director | Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District

Barbara Law is an Assistant Chief and the Emergency Medical Services Director for the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District. Barbara began her career in EMS in 1989 and joined the fire service in 1994. Since then, she has worked her way up the ranks from Firefighter to Assistant Chief. Barbara is also an EMS educator and adjunct faculty member with the EMT and Paramedic programs at American River College in Sacramento.
 
Barbara is a system administrator for Metro Fire’s Elite program and was instrumental in the department’s transition from paper PCRs to the ePCR program, and sin building out the Community Health module in Elite for Metro Fire’s Mobile Integrated Health pilot program. Barbara also serves her community as a member of Sacramento County’s Public Health Advisory Board.
