Literature: Fire Interoperability for States

Screenshot of a document outlining ImageTrend’s interoperability solutions for state fire offices, explaining data entry methods into NERIS and benefits of compliant data exchange.

Empowering State Fire Offices with Complete, Compliant NERIS Data

The transition from NFIRS to NERIS changed how fire incident data moves, but it did not change a state’s need for complete, quality, and compliant data.

As a NERIS V1 Data Exchange Compatible vendor, ImageTrend supports a variety of paths to keeping your state repository whole.

How It Works

1. State Repository Site Direct Entry: Fire departments complete NERIS incidents in your ImageTrend Elite™ site using the NERIS dataset and any state-required custom fields with state-configured plus-one codes, supplemental questions, worksheets, preset values, and validation rules.

2. NERIS Direct Entry: Fire departments complete NERIS incidents in NERIS. Incidents can be imported into your ImageTrend Elite™ site in the NERIS Standard JSON format (NERIS fields only).

3. Other Vendor Direct Entry: Fire departments complete NERIS incidents in another vendor’s RMS. Incidents export to NERIS to generate a unique incident ID included in the file to prevent duplicate incidents should the incident be exported from your site after importing into your ImageTrend Elite™ site. Accepted file formats via API or manual import:

  • NERIS Standard JSON: Used if the other vendor can export incidents in the NERIS format.
  • NERIS Custom JSON: Used if the other vendor has completed development to export incidents in ImageTrend’s JSON format.
  • NOTE: NFIRS incidents cannot be converted to NERIS.

4. State-Specific Data Retained: Fields outside the NERIS schema stay in your Elite repository, so state compliance requirements are met without reporting gaps for your fire departments.

5. Actionable Insights: Your office reports on both NERIS and state-specific data in Report Writer and dashboards, supporting compliance monitoring, risk analysis, and firefighter safety initiatives.

Key Benefits for States

  • NERIS V1 Data Exchange Compatible: ImageTrend meets the technical requirements to connect securely and reliably to the NERIS API.
  • No Lost Fields: State-mandated and custom fields are retained alongside the NERIS core schema, protecting fire departments from compliance gaps.
  • Proven at Scale: More than 3,700 fire departments are exporting to NERIS through ImageTrend, with over 4.5 million incidents successfully exported as of June 2026.
  • One Connected Fire Platform: NERIS reporting sits alongside inspections, pre-plans, investigations, training, CQI, and analytics in a single end-to-end solution.
