Background

Electric scooters (e-scooters) are reshaping urban transportation, but they are also creating a new and growing source of trauma-related 911 calls. As shared escooter use continues to rise across U.S. and Canadian cities, particularly with the availability of rental devices, EMS agencies are increasingly responding to injuries tied to these devices. Emergency department visits linked to escooter incidents have climbed sharply in recent years, yet little is known about what these events look like before patients reach the hospital. This month’s short report fills that gap by examining thousands of prehospital trauma responses associated with escooter use.

Inside the Report

This report takes a closer look at when, where, and how EMS teams respond to escooter trauma incidents. Explore seasonal and timeofday trends, patient demographics, and the role alcohol or drug use may play. The report also examines transport and refusal patterns, offering insight into how often these calls result in hospital transport and which populations are more likely to decline care.
